Why did my doorbell miss someone at the door?
A doorbell misses people for 3 reasons. It can’t see them. It wakes up too slowly. Or the alert never makes it to your phone.
You find a box on the porch and never got a ring. Or the video shows an empty step. The doorbell usually isn’t broken. Something around it is in the way.
Is my front door a Wi-Fi dead spot?
In a lot of homes, yes. The router sits in the basement or a back room. The signal has to get all the way to the front and through the outside wall.
Brick, stone, and steel doors make it worse. Plenty of homes up here have brick fronts. Many doorbells also use only the 2.4 GHz band, and that gets crowded when houses are close together.
When the signal is weak, the alert is late. The video starts late. Live view may not load at all.
I test the Wi-Fi right at the doorbell, using the number the doorbell shows in its app. Sometimes the fix is moving a mesh unit. Sometimes it’s adding one, or a wired access point near the front. I’ll tell you which one and what it costs before I do anything.

Why does my battery doorbell wake up late?
A battery doorbell sleeps to save power. When someone walks up, it has to wake, turn on the camera, and get back on Wi-Fi. Then it can ping you.
On weak Wi-Fi each of those steps is slower. A driver can drop a box and be gone before the video starts. Cold winters drain the battery faster too.
I check the battery and how fast it drains. If you have doorbell wires, I can often run it on wired power so it stays awake. If not, I set it up to wake and connect as fast as it can.
Is my wired doorbell getting enough power?
Often it isn’t. Old doorbell wiring was made for a simple chime, not a camera.
Many video doorbells want about 16 to 24 volts. An older chime transformer may only put out about 10. With too little power, the doorbell restarts, drops off Wi-Fi, shows poor night video, or makes the chime buzz.
I test the voltage at the transformer and at the door. If it’s too small, I swap it. Some chimes also need a small power kit so they ring inside when someone presses the button.

Could my settings or the way it points be the problem?
Yes, and it’s common. Say the doorbell pings you for every car. Someone turns the motion setting way down. Now it misses the person on the steps too.
Motion zones can leave out the walk. Doorbells that sense body heat notice people late if they walk straight at the door, and they struggle on hot days. A doorbell mounted too high or aimed at the street misses faces. A storm door, a column, or a bush can block the view. Morning or evening sun can wash out the picture at the same time every day.
I walk up to your door like a delivery driver and watch when it reacts. Then I set the zones to cover the walk and the steps, not the street. You shouldn’t get 50 alerts a day. If the angle is off, a small angle mount usually fixes it.
Why didn’t my phone get the alert or save the video?
Sometimes the doorbell did its job and the phone held the alert. Do Not Disturb, battery saver, or an app update can turn alerts off. Sometimes only 1 phone was set up, or the app signed out after a password change.
Saved video is a plan question. On many brands you get alerts and live view for free, but nothing is saved without a paid plan. A free trial may have ended. Clips may be set so short they stop before the person leaves.
I check every phone that should get alerts and give each person their own login. Then I tell you plainly what your plan does and doesn’t save.

Won’t any Wi-Fi doorbell work the same?
No. Doorbells differ in power, Wi-Fi bands, how they sense motion, and what the plan includes. Your house matters as much as the brand.
Put a new doorbell on the same weak Wi-Fi and it will often miss people too. So I don’t start by selling you a new one. I find out why yours misses. Before I leave, I test it from the walk, the steps, and the street.
Is there anything you can’t fix?
A few things. If there are no doorbell wires, running new ones can be hard. A battery doorbell still works, but it needs a moment to wake.
Once in a while the doorbell itself is the weak link, and I’ll tell you. If your internet is down, no doorbell can send alerts, though some still ring the chime. And a video doorbell isn’t a full security system. More cameras or an alarm is a separate talk.
What else do people ask me?
Why does my video doorbell miss people?
Usually weak Wi-Fi at the door, a slow-waking battery, low power, or wrong settings. The doorbell itself is often fine.
Won’t any Wi-Fi doorbell work the same?
No. Your house matters as much as the brand.
Why does the video start after the person is gone?
The doorbell is slow to wake up or slow to connect to Wi-Fi.
Do I need a new doorbell?
Usually not. We only suggest one if yours is the real problem.
Will my old chime still ring inside?
Usually, yes. Some chimes need a small power kit.
Do I have to pay for a monthly plan?
Not for alerts on most doorbells. Saved video often needs one.
